Several prominent bloggers and other online personalities were invited to have a round-table discussion with Fiona and Terry Givens. The conversation centered on the paradigms conveyed in their recent book “The Crucible of Doubt,” which is a faithful and romantic expression of the faithful heterodoxy often discussed and lived by the online Mormon community. Towards the beginning of the meeting Terryl eloquently described his understanding of the books target audience.
“…Our book [is] directed to those people who want to find a way to embrace what they find worth embracing, not to convince them that they should stay or that the church is true or anything else, and to create a different set of expectations and understandings that allow them to live with greater spiritual satisfaction and fulfillment.”
The rest of the meeting was consumed by detailing the struggle of trying to live in “the middle” between the overly idyllic church spoken of on Sunday and the highly critical views of the church shared online. The middle is a tough place to be.
